Seven Mile Bridge, "Fred" the tree

7 mile tree

There has been this 1 tree growing on nothing but concrete on the Old Seven Mile Bridge. The Locals have even named the tree "Fred" and decorate it every Christmas. In September of 2017 Hurricane Irma pretty well leveled everything from Big Pine Key to Marathon but Fred survived and still stands today. Fred the tree has almost become a tourist attraction. The Monroe County Commission has had several votes to remove Fred but it always gets voted down. I think they fear no reelection if they voted yes to cutting Fred down.

Eyebrow houses, Key West

The "Eyebrow" construction is popular in Key West. This architectural style became common in the 1920-1940, pre air conditioning, days. The large overhang provides shade for the front porch and keeps the upper floors cooler. Eyebrow homes are quite popular in the Bahamas for the same reason. Waterspouts off of Big Pine Key

Waterspouts have been reputed to be mini tornados over the ocean. They may be fun to look at buy, like any tornado, they can do some damage. They will lift fish and lobster traps out of the water and move them elsewhere. People have found dozens of fish or a lobster trap in their yards if the waterspout hits land. I could never verify it but I am convinced I drove through one on my boat in the dark. I was cruising along Newfound Harbor, a channel I have crossed well over 500 times in the pitch black dark. For about 5 seconds the boat shoot, rattled and it took all my strength to keep the steering wheel steady. The next day there were reports of waterspouts hitting the open water homes in Jolly Roger Estates, a subdivision on Little Torch Key that runs along Newfound Harbor. Waterspouts are pretty from a distance but can be dangerous. Be safe out there on the water.

Key West Sunrise

I was walking the beach today and couldn't believe how beautiful the sunrise was today. We have amazing sunrises and sunsets in Key West. Most mornings I will make a cup of tea and walk across the street to Coconut Mallory Marina to sit on the dock and watch the sun come up. I see something different and beautiful each time. Buy a home from me in Key West or the Lower Keys and you can see these amazing sunrises and sunsets too.

How far is it to Key West?

Key West is like going to the Caribbean but you can drive. No matter where you're coming from you can always drive. I used to drive straight through from Boston with a friend and it would take us about 28 hours. We'd use the tank of gas rule. One would drive and when it was time to refill the gas tank we'd switch drivers. If we left Boston about 7:30-8:00 PM we would be through New York and New Jersey before the morning rush hour then it was I95 all the way to Fort Lauderdale. New Town, Key West

This great home in Key West's New Town neighborhood is well kept, has great curb appeal and plenty of off street parking. I live in New Town myself. I've been in the same house for over 25 years. Most of the residents of New Town are year round working locals. Very few "Snowbirds" here. Generally speaking, the lots are a lot bigger inNew Town than Old Town which is a great feature since we spend most of our time outside in the Florida Keys.

Watching the boats go by

I'm sitting on the dock of the Sunset Pier at the Ocean Key Resort and Marina having a cup of tea. All the boats are making their way out for a day of fun. I've seen the snorkel boats, dive boats, off shore fishing boats, wave runner tours, reef fishing boats, inshore fishing boats and a lot of people on their own personal boats heading out sunshine, relaxation and fun. Solana Village, Key West

The Solana Village Townhomes are great properties and still somewhat affordable. There are two condo associations within Solana Village. Make sure you look at the multi colored ones in the back not the brown ones in the front. The main attraction to Solana Village is the price. Both the front and back units are priced within reach of the working professional local but the brown ones in front have HOA Fees of $1,660.00 per month whereas the units in the back have an HOA Fee of only $1,400 per year which works out to be $116.67 a month. The HOA fees make a huge difference in your payment when considering the front units vs the back units and they both offer the exact same amenities for the HOA fee. The back ones are also, in my opinion, built better. The back ones are also designed more like a Townhome setting whereas the front units are build more like an apartment complex. Eyebrow houses of Key West

I love the "Eyebrow Houses" architectural design. They were originally built with the long roof overhang to shade the house. There are a lot of eyebrow houses in Key West. They are also prevalent in the Bahamas where many of the homes do not have air conditioning.
