My day started off with being woken by a hungry Kitty who wanted her breakfast. Turned out to be a good thing as we lost power in the middle of the night and my alarm didn't go off. It was 7:45 and I had my regular Tuesday Morning Breakfast with a friend. I woke up and quickly made Kitty some Cream of Wheat while throwing a cup of coffee down my throat trying to wake up and warm up at the same time. Showered, dressed and in the car all in about 10 minutes.
As most of you have probably figured out by now I am a creature of habit so I am sure you already know today's breakfast was at Harpoon Harry's. As the saying goes, "If it's not broken don't fix it". Harpoon Harry's is consistently good food, great service, in and out fast with very reasonable prices. Of course the fact that they don't even bring us menus probably helps. We walk in and our server has already put our order in and has our drinks in her hand as she approaches the table. We sit at the same table eating the same thing with the same server every week. There is no such thing as too much of a good thing.
After breakfast I decided to be daring and walk across the street to the Key West Bight, or "Historic Seaport" as the Chamber of Commerce chooses to call it. I guess Historic Seaport is supposed to be more fancy even though it has been called The Bight for over 100 years. A friend of mine works on one of the local snorkel boats and he is looking to move out of his current rental into another one. He asked me if I would look at the lease for him before he signed it and he bribed me with a Cafe Con Leche from Cuban Coffee Queen which is right in the parking lot of The Bight. We sat on the dock and drank our coffee in the sun going over his lease which turned out to be written perfectly.
I got through the whole Shock and Awe of sitting on the water in temperatures below 60 degrees with wind coming off the Harbor at about 20 MPH and headed back home to work from my INDOOR home office. No poolside desk for me today. I got a lot of paperwork done from the weekend and sent some properties to a potential buyer looking at Old Town Condos. I fielded one of my once a day calls from Zillow who can't seem to understand if I was not interested in advertising with them off of a Cold call the last 500 times they called more than likely I am not interested this time either. The call usually goes something to the nature of "Hi Gary? This is Matt from Zillow. I'm calling you today to tell you about a great advertising and lead program we have available". My daily response is "Hi Matt. If you would email me some information I will be happy to look it over but I do not buy anything from a cold call". His daily reply is "This is not a cold call. I am from Zillow". I then ask "I don't believe I have an account set up with you do I?". He answers "No, that is the reason for this call". I reply "If we do not have an account and you are calling soliciting business that makes it a cold call. If you email me something I will be happy to look it over". He says he will email me information right away which he never does then he will call me again tomorrow going through the same script.
A few hours of office work and I was ready for lunch. Today I ate at Turtle Krawls which is on the water at the Key West Bight actually located right where I had coffee with my friend this morning. Turtle Krawls is one of the few very casual places on the water that is enclosed and has heat. They open it up for open air dining when Mother Nature is being nice and close the windows for weeks like this. The food is great, the fish they are serving today was swimming yesterday, the servers are fun and they take good care of the locals there on our lunch hour. They are one of the few places that have an even balance of tourists vs locals and they cater to all of us getting the locals in and out while letting the tourists take their time enjoying the boats going in and out.
Lunch was over and I went over to Truman Annex to photograph the area, houses, Truman Little White House and even out to the beach at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park. I have a past client who owns a house upon Sugarloaf Key who is interested in an investment property in Truman Annex. It always amazes me how people who live in Big Pine, Little Torch, Cudjoe or Sugarloaf never come to Key West and don't know the area. It is only about a 15 minute drive but they don't do it. I have one friend who has lived on Little Torch Key over 30 years and she might come to Key West once every two years.
I finished running around the State Park with a camera looking like a tourist and came back home to work. I weeded out the good and bad pictures, put them on a disc and drove up to Sugarloaf to deliver them. They were sitting outside on the water having a glass of wine but they just got here last week from Wisconsin so this heinous weather is warm to them. I however delivered the disc, said my hello and goodbye in the same sentence and got back in my heated car heading to Key West.
At this point I called it a day, watched the News with Kitty and cooked dinner. Spent the rest of the night watching James Dean in "Rebel Without a Cause" wrapped in my electric blanket and now I'm ready for bed. Might not have been the most exciting day but that was my Day in Key West.
Until Tomorrow,
Gary
