I woke up to temperatures of 76 an 6:30 AM and NOAA was predicting it to get warmer which it did. When I saw that and took into consideration that today was not a Business Day I decided to take a day off and play on the water. I went down to the Key West Bight for breakfast at Cuban Coffee Queen then out on the Sunset Watersports "Do It All" Boat. I actually used to Captain that trip almost 20 years ago when Sunset was the only company doing it. They are now using a different boat but the trip is pretty much the same.
Breakfast was delicious as always. Cuban Coffee Queen is located abut 200 yards from the Check In for Sunset Watersports. I finished my Cafe con Leche as I walked over. Sunset has grown quite a bit since I worked there but a few of the people I knew are still around. I checked in and sat on the dock waiting to board the boat and people watched. I always got a laugh at seeing Schooner Wharf Bar packed full at 7:30 AM when I was working for Sunset. It was about 9:15 at this point and there wasn't an empty seat in the house. We call them "The Breakfast Club" drinking their breakfast every morning.
We boarded the boat about 9:30 and gt everyone situated. The Captain welcomed everyone aboard, gave a description of the day's events, gave the Coast Guard Required Safety Speech which points out the life rafts, fire extinguishers, man overboard ring and life jackets. When I was the Captain I just pointed out to everyone most of the trip we were only in about four feet of water. If the boat sinks just stand up. Then I pointed out what they really wanted to know the location of, the bar. That might seem strange to a lot of people at 9:30 AM but not in Key West.
We got underway and made it out to the play area in about 20 minutes. The crew set up all the toys and the fun began. Anyone who hasn't been on the Sunset Watersports Do It All, this is a must do in Key West. You get to try just about every watersports activity all in one trip. They have snorkeling, kayaking, paddle boarding, water skiing, wake boarding, wind surfing, Sunfish sailboats, Banana Boat rides, water slide, water trampoline, water rock climbing wall, Waverunners and Parasailing all in one trip. The serve a light breakfast on the ride out. There is a full plated lunch mid day. Soft drinks are served all day and once people are done with the Waverunners open bar for the remainder of the trip. It goes from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM and you are on the move all day long. The Crew really goes above and beyond to see to it everyone is taken care of. They make it fun and there is something for everyone from young children to Grandparents. I can't say enough about what a good time I had. Thank you very much to the Captain and Crew of the Party Cat.
One thing I remember from my days of working on the Do It All boat is the passengers would say they were wiped out at the end of the day and I was just that. What a great time and the lever of customer service was amazing. It took everything I had to drive home. I rested for an hour then my mind was on dinner. I didn't feel like cooking and didn't feel like a big meal out. I went downtown for a quick sandwich at Panini Shcamini in Duval Square. They are a Mom and Pop type sandwich restaurant that combines fast food with healthy eating. Not to mention the owners are fellow Bostonians so I liked them immediately. The first time I went in there about 10 years ago I had on a Red Sox hat and the Owner/Chef had on a Bruins shirt. We became instant buddies. I don't think I have ever had anything in there that wasn't perfect.
I finished my food and called it a night. I was exhausted from a great day on the water. I was full from an excellent dinner and I was ready to go home and do nothing which is exactly what I did. That was my Day in Key West.
Until Tomorrow,
Gary
