I woke up this morning and thought someone moved my bed to Fargo in the middle of the night. The NOAA App on my phone said it was 57 degrees outside and the wind was 22 MPH with gusts over 30. This is not the Key West I signed up for. I just sat in my bed with my sweat pants, sweat shirt and even socks on. I had my electric mattress pad on as well as my electric blanket. I did not want to get out of bed. This weather is just not normal.
I finally got the courage to get out of bed and made it to the living room to have my coffee. I broke out my stocking hat I bought when I went to Wisconsin for a December Packers Game last year. I think I felt colder today than I did in Green Bay. At least in Wisconsin it is supposed to be cold. I ran outside to get the newspaper in the driveway and when I sat I ran I don't think I've moved that fast in decades. If this keeps up I am going to have to buy more socks. I only own two pair.
As much as I feared removing my layers of clothing I had to get in the shower. I was getting hungry and Sunday is El Siboney Day. You want to get there early on Sunday to avoid the crowds. Once Church lets out El Siboney is packed. I had my "Old Faithful" Cuban Mix Sandwich and Ice Tea with lime. Partly because of the heinous weather conditions we were under and partly because it is delicious I took a Cafe Con Leche to go. El Siboney is, in my opinion, the best restaurant in Key West. Authentic home cooked food and the prices are about equal to Wendy's or Burger King.
Curiosity got the best of me so I decided to drive by the Beach after lunch to see how many crazy tourists were laying out in this weather. Sure enough there were quite a few people in bathing suits and bikinis laying out in the sun. Some of them were even in the water. I like going to the beach in the winter to see the tourists sunning themselves and swimming while the locals are in winter parkas with hats and gloves on. I of course was the latter. I guess if you just left Minneapolis this weather is warm.
I came home and researched some Condos for a friend who is looking for one for her Mom to buy. There are some great properties on the market but also some junk. I weeded through the good, the bad and the ugly sending the good ones. I did some more computer work and filing. The rest of my afternoon was spent cleaning the house which was fine with me. I was inside and the heat was on. I made some White Chocolate Hot Chocolate and enjoyed the afternoon inside. I had dinner plans with some clients who have become good friends over the years.
We had reservations at Louie's Backyard which was known as Key West's best Fine Dining back in the day. Of course the nicest feature of Louie's is sitting on the ocean. Not knowing we were going to have this cold I requested outdoor oceanside seating. They did their best to have extra torch heaters which kept it very comfortable other than the occasional gust of wind off the water which is normal and expected any given day. As anyone who reads this blog regularly knows, I do my best to only write good things about good experiences but once in a while I will have a bad experience and tonight was one of them. Unfortunately Louie's is living off their reputation of 25 years ago and keeps a full house because Jimmy Buffett has a few songs about eating there but the quality is not what it used to be. All four of us were unhappy with out dinner. I must say the Server was great. He was very attentive and pleasant. We can't hold bad food quality against the person who served it. The bill was over $500 for four people and I stopped at Mr. Z's on my way home for a slice of pizza. OK, no more negative writing. I had a great time with some good friends I only see a couple times a year when they come to town.
I am home safe and sound, layered in my bed clothes sitting here with Kitty wrapped in the electric blanket. It even gets cold in Paradise but that was my Day in Key West.
Until Tomorrow,
Gary
