Gather around at midnight to watch a red high heel drop with drag queen Sushi at Bourbon Street Pub/New Orleans House located on the corner of Duval and Petronia Streets.  This annual event/party that was started off as a joke has gained followers and grows by the year.  Remember, What happens in Key West stays in Key West!!!

The countdown starts 10 minutes before midnight, but the fun starts early in the day with the musical humor of Mike McCloud and Friends from noon - 5:00 p.m. Dance and Groove the night away with Moose and the Bulletproof Blues Band and Cool Breeze (Funk, Pop, Motown & Rhythm & Blues..............into the new year!

Join everyone on the harbor walk for a musical line up guaranteed to take you dancing into the new year, and for COUNTDOWN 2006 to 2007!!!

New Years Eve at Sloppy Joes

Who needs Time Square?  Key West will host many events and we won't have the cold weather or snow.  Look for a different posting every day between now and December 31st to keep up on your choices of how to ring in The New Year Key West Style. On December 31, 2006 Sloppy Joe's will host it's 14th Annual Dropping of the Conch Shell. Anything goes New Year's Eve in Key West on Duval Street. You'll find people all decked out for the midnight celebration, and folks still in their bathing suits when the Conch Shell drops from the roof of Sloppy Joe's Bar. The idea and implementation of the New Year's Eve Dropping of the Conch Shell is that of local artist Tobias McGregor. In 1993, McGregor approach Sloppy Joe's management about the New Year's Eve plan. "Before the dropping of the Conch Shell, everyone would just wonder around Duval Street, celebrating the New Year when their watches read midnight. The crowd was just not in sync," said McGregor.

The initial Conch Shell was rigged on a frame, the shell was lowered manually, and timed by watch, or by looking across the street into a window and watching the count down in Times Square on someone's TV. McGregor said, "the Queen Conch has come along way since the early years, and the crowd at the corner of Duval and Greene expects more each year. The new Conch Shell with special effects will be sure to please the crowds gathered below." The crowd starts to gather on the street around 10:00pm as Sloppy Joe's rooftop host entertains the crowd as everyone waits for the count down clock to begin. As midnight strikes and the Conch Shell is lowered confetti, streamers and lights will fill the sky. New Year's Eve inside Sloppy Joes... Join us New Year's Eve at Sloppy Joe's as we ring in the New Year with dancing, party favors, beads and of course Sloppy Joe's 14th Annual Dropping of the Conch Shell at Midnight. For those in the bar the dropping of the Conch Shell can be viewed on closed circuit TV in the main bar, Backroom and upstairs Speak Easy.
